Pick a Park: How to decompress after work near CBD, Singapore

Tough day at work? Fight that urge to flip your desk and head to the nearest green patch for some fresh air and fresher perspective.

If you’re working in and around CBD, hang on to this list of nearby secret parks and patches to get your zen on.

Note: Ideally, I wanted to use Instagram embeds to show you the parks but WordPress is mean and won’t let me. Since I don’t have actual pictures, we shall have to make do with an assortment of random Singaporean park pictures I took last month.

Telok Ayer Green
Location: Boon Tat St, Singapore 069620

So, it’s not even noon and the day isn’t going as planned? Take your lunch break at this green pocket sandwiched between two historical structures – the Nagore Durgha Shrine and the Thian Hock Keng temple. With a small water feature and shaded seating covered with vines, this little patch is perfect for quick pacing while you take deep breaths and strategise your next move.

Good for: Distracting yourself with a history lesson, practising presentations on life-size statues who won’t judge and some quick pacing

Ann Siang Hill
Location: Ann Siang Road, near Club Street

Need a moment or two before you catch dinner and drinks with work colleagues? Hidden in plain sight is Ann Siang Hill, a patch of green with a hotel-like entrance. Climb a few stairs to reach this short and sweet spot and grant yourself some quiet time to catch up on all memes and tweets that you missed during work. Sit back on shaded benches, take a breather, eat some chocolate and remind yourself that it’s Friday eve.

Good for: Quick meditation, productive Facebook/Twitter time and wishing you were a rich Chinese businessman who lived on this hill years ago

Hong Lim Park
Location: 175 South Bridge Rd, Singapore 058740

If you need to disengage before boarding the train back home, this park is the place to be. Located next to Clarke Quay MRT, head there to meditate, stroll or simply relax on a park bench. The walking track leads onto the footpaths in certain parts but it’s good enough clock in a few steps.

Good for: Prepping your task list to conquer tomorrow, brisk walking, bodyweight workout, meditating to forgive that passive-aggressive colleague and marvelling at the architecture of ParkRoyal on Pickering

Duxton Plain Park
Location: New Bridge Road, 089140

This unique, linear park sits pretty between the back alleys of shophouses and eventually takes you under The Pinnacle@Duxton. Lined with trees, it has a nice long path for you to run away from office drama. Unwind with a book as the members of Chin Woo Athletic Association practice martial arts with weapons or simply treat yourself to a swinging seat.

You’ll come across several interesting things – from a Tembusu memorial tree planted in honour of Singapore’s Founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew to the Shrine of Sharifah Rogayah.WhatsApp Image 2018-01-29 at 7.43.51 PM.jpeg

Good for: Running, walking, bodyweight workout, brushing up on your martial arts and if all else fails, hoping to a nearby pub to drink your Tuesday away

Pearl’s Hill City Park
Location: Chin Swee Road, Pearl Bank, 169879

Dense, vast and peaceful, it’s perfect for days when you get off work early. Run, walk and skip your weekday woes away in this expansive park. On a pleasant evening, make your way to the exercise centre on top of the hill to burn calories faster than you crunch numbers.

Chill with aquatic life at the pond, marvel at the countless shades of green, catch up on your Instagram or simply lay back and plot an investigation to find out who stole your lunch from the refrigerator!
